Write On, Wrimos!

In case you weren't aware, NaNoWriMo is in full swing - we're almost half-way through and for once, I don't feel too stressed or too far behind not to enjoy the month of writing. This year, I made two goals:

  1. Write daily - it doesn't have to be the 1,667 NaNo "daily goal," but as long as I get some words written, I'll be happy.

  2. Write 50,000 words... in other words - win NaNo.

I feel as if I am well on my way to doing both. Currently, I have written just over 36,000 words with my highest day being over 5,000 words.

Not to say this has been easy. Or that all these words will be staying after NaNo.

But, as I hinted above, I've been working on making sure this NaNo I enjoy the challenges of sprints, of making goals, and most importantly, of writing.

It has helped that we took a short vacation to the mountains - no people, no day-job work, just hiking and writing. It was a relaxing week and I got over 20,000 written there.

Another helpful tool this year has been my recent purchase of the AlphaSmart Neo2. Yes, I know that technology is thirteen years old, premiering around 2007. I know that it is discontinued and doesn't have service. But, let's be honest. The reasons why my writing often suffers is because I can't get the first draft completed since I am too busy researching every little detail... or hopping on Twitter, or Instagram, or Facebook or hey - that looks fun, let's try that creative idea.

The best news about the Neo2 is that it doesn't connect to the internet. It has 8 files, allowing for approximately 25 pages per file. It will send the pages you've typed to your computer (MAC or PC) via USB cord and then you can clear the file and start again. It is lightweight and very durable - my 2 year old may or may not have dropped it several times.

Downsides? The AlphaSmart 3000 sounds more like a typewriter (which is what I was hoping) but had less space. The other downside? I really wanted it to look more like a "modern typewriter." Truthfully, it looks like a keyboard and call it good. I will say though, I don't really worry if I leave it in the car as much as if I had my computer. Plus, it a wonderful to use in the car.

I would love to eventually try the Freewrite Traveler... maybe when I am published as a reward to myself... oh to keep pushing forward to that goal. It's a little pricey just to have a distraction free writing, when I have the Neo2 which is completely capable.

But this was a happy post. I'm happy with where I am on NaNo and enjoying my month of first draft writing... with a new story.

So, write on Wrimos! You can do it.
