Hello! It's been a while since I've written about myself, and though I often talk about my books and writing, I don't necessarily talk about myself, so I thought I would do a quick introduction.
Who am I?
I am a writer.
I love the sea.
I am hard-of-hearing.
I love to read - all genres, excluding biographies (mostly). I prefer reading books that open your imagination of what could be.
I love languages and know ASL, French, and Spanish.
I craft at random times.
I love movies - especially musicals and dance movies.
I am a night owl but my husband and son are early birds.
I have a toddler.
I have two dogs.
My husband is a cyclist and we do a family bike ride on Sundays.
What does it mean by hard-of-hearing?
While I have some hearing, it is hard for me to hear high and low sounds and the middle can be a muddle at times. I wear hearing aids but they are not a miracle worker and I still struggle to understand someone speaking when I can't read the lips to help. Also, when I'm home I don't always wear my hearing aids since I get headaches from them. My husband and son often do sign language with me to help me understand their conversations.
Why did I start writing?
I started writing when I was in elementary school. I never got my T.V. time, or car, or game station taken away if I was in trouble - I would get my books taken from me. So, to have something to read, I would craft short stories and fell in love with writing.
As I got older, I continued to write. One thing I noticed about the books I would read is that there were rarely (very) any deaf or hard-of-hearing characters. And those that had D/HoH characters were all magically able to talk or understand the hearing person. I knew I needed to give a different view, so that is why all my stories have a D/HoH character in the story.
Sometimes my stories include bits about fostering or adopting, which comes from my two nephews who were adopted. It is another subject very dear to my heart.
What kind of books do I write?
My focus is on fantasy for young adult. Most of my stories are a coming of age story with touches of magic. I write young adult because when I was younger, that is when I wanted the types of characters I am writing about - and the stories that I am writing. Why do I write fantasy? Who doesn't love the what ifs and the idea of magic? At least, I love the possibilities so I write about the what ifs and magic.
So, this is me. Nice to meet you.
