“We read to know we're not alone.” ― William Nicholson, Shadowlands: A Play
So, I've done a thing...
But at least it's with a friend, right?
I have started an online ASL Book Club with my friend, Desi. It's called DEAFinitely Readers.
I've been thinking about starting a book club for a while. I did start one that is in person with a group of interpreter friends, deaf friends, and friends who know sign language - mostly as a way to get together, hang out, chat about life - and books - and also, because we were all connected through Katherine. (If you haven't read about my friend, do. She was amazing. You can see the previous post HERE).
And I love that book club. It's so much fun and an awesome night of socialization. But we don't read books with a Deaf centric focus. And I really want to find and discuss books that have either deaf or hard-of-hearing characters and showcase Deaf culture or ones that are written by deaf/hard-of-hearing authors (and ASL interpreters).
So, after several weeks of discussing with Desi, and seeing if there was any interest from TikTok LIVE, I decided to go ahead and set it up.
This book club will be focused on reading books that have the following:
deaf, deaf-blind, hard-of-hearing characters
written by D/HoH authors
or written by sign language interpreters or CODAs
a showcase of Deaf culture, experiences, and sign language
I do have a curated list that we with be choosing from first, but I do welcome any suggestions of ones I may not have put on the list yet! To see my list of book recommendations, you can click the button below.
If you are interested in joining, you download Fable (free app) and search for "Deafinitely Readers" join the book club. We are also using Discord to chat as well - once you're in the club, you'll see the Discord link.
Or, you can click the button below and it will take you to Fable and the book club!
We are so excited for this book club!
The first book has been voted on and we are doing:
We plan on reading about 8 chapters a week, and discussing them on TikTok Live Mondays and Wednesdays. We are also working out a monthly "video chat" (possibly Zoom, possibly Discord... still working through the details). More information to follow on that.
Anyway, all this to say, let me know if you have any questions about the book club - and come on and join!
