Camp Time Once Again

Camp NaNoWriMo started again recently. I know it seems like I only get a lot of writing done during either camp, or NaNo, but I promise I do write a lot more than April, July, and November.

This camp, I decided to work on a rewrite of Flash of Gold.

Reason for the ReWrite

First, I want to change the title; I don't feel like it fits the story any longer. It's not just about "flashes" and at the time, I feel like I was trying to be "mysterious" and garner interest by having a unique title. I don't believe that has to happen any longer. (Does this mean I'm #growingup?)

Second, I wrote FoG my senior year of college, though I did snippets before. My writing style has changed drastically since then. For one, I decided to not shy away from my #deafness and to always include a D/HoH character to give kids who were like me someone to identify with in the story. They aren't always main characters, but at least one character deserves to be D/HoH. So, not only did my writing style change, but also, I wanted to add a character into FoG that is Deaf.

In FoG, the main character is not Deaf - she had eye issues growing up and that is central to the story. The story itself revolves around the fact that the eyes are the windows to the soul, which connects to their magic. But, ASL is a major part of her life.

Third, and last reason, it is currently only around 45,000 words. It really needs to be closer to 80,000 for a solid YA novel. There are more descriptions and scenes that I wanted to add at the time (I kept note), but worked on newer stories instead of going back and fixing older ones.

On a happy note, it's only 9 days into the month and I'm already halfway to my goal. I did do a lower goal than I had planned on since I wasn't sure how much time I'd be editing versus writing. It's not like I can't continue writing, but I may switch to editing once I meet the word goal.

Is Editing Piling on the Work?

Not only am I trying to work on rewriting a full draft, I am also editing. I am working on light edits on TLD before I give it to my beta readers. I reread most of Deaf Tales the other day, and I really love the story, so I am working on edits for the short stories.

I am busy.

Everyone is busy.

That is no excuse to not write or edit or think about the next steps. As much as I love TLD and I want to see it out in the world, I am starting to feel like Deaf Tales would publish better at the beginning.

So, while my beta readers are reading TLD, I will be doing hard edits for Deaf Tales.

Maybe, eventually, I'll get back to working on Trials. I miss that book.
