A Court of...Twists and Romantasy?

Updated: Apr 3

I may have given in and finally read ACOTAR or, A Court of Thorns and Roses, by Sarah J. Maas, but I haven't decided yet if I will be continuing that series.

**spoiler alert**

I have been promising a friend that I would read this for over 5 years - and I finally did. Once I started it was an easy read. I haven’t quite decided how I felt about it, so maybe reviewing will help.

I love retellings.

I love Beauty and the Beast. And while I know this several have stated it is based on it, with the spoilers I’ve seen (and honestly, read about), this book really isn’t because it doesn’t continue with that retelling. It becomes it’s own story - which is fine, but I also feel like it would’ve been fine to stop the story with one book. Or a duology since it left you with a Rhysand cliffhanger.

A few of things about the book:

  • I hated how Feyre was able to continuously best the Fae - without magic. There should be no way it was possible outside of her first killing.

  • The curse seemed like a way to just explain things off in the end (and too specific on things). It wasn’t believable.

  • Some parts felt like the proverbial horror film girl - “don’t go down to the basement!” type thing.

  • She went from been self-sufficient to helpless to heroine (I’m mortal but I’ll win) too fast to feel natural. Same with how she fell “in love” with Tamlin.

  • I think a good ending would be with her death - the Fae wouldn’t have revived her even for freeing the High Lords - they believe themselves to be above her and didn’t even get along. Especially starting with Lucian’s father. He would never have given a “kernel”. A good character arc would’ve been for Nesta to be avenge her in the next book. (Personal opinion)

  • I did like that Feyre did have something she wasn’t good at (illiterate) and how she did actually seem to think in colors.

  • I liked Rhysand as a morally-grey character - not quite true villain.

Still am not sure how I feel about it. It has potential to be interesting but I don’t think I’m all about it like my friend. Still, interesting… and another friend recently mentioned for me to think of Tamlin not as the Beast, but as Gaston, and it's changed my perspective of him. It's also been hard to resist just going ahead and reading the next because a vast majority of my friends are currently reading the series.

But...

As I mentioned earlier, I don't particularly like filler books, or books that you "just have to get through" to read the "good" book. I've heard the next book (ACOMAF, A Court of Mist and Fury) is one of the best, but I am still debating with myself if I want to read the next. I have so many other books that are on my TBR (to be read) list, and honestly, while I want to know what happens next, I think I'll move on to another book - or series.

Do you think I should continue?

Happy Reading!
