Once upon a time, magic existed across the land. It could be found anywhere - in people, in animals, even in inanimate objects. Everyone had magic. But as life went on, people forgot about the land’s magic. And while it was fading and few remembered a time when the land had been alive with magic, some places still remembered. There was one house in particular. It was a crusty old house, with cobwebs and creatures. Some say it was haunted, that you couldn’t blink your eyes for fear of disappearing. Others laughed at the tales of the haunted old house and claimed that it was just a sad house because its owners had abandoned it and no one had bought it.

The girl woke, right at the stroke of midnight. What woke me? She wondered, looking about, noticing how bright her room had become. It almost seemed as if it was day - instead of night. Unsure if she had fully closed her curtains, she got up and went to the window to look out. The full moon shone brightly, but, it wasn't making the light that pierced through her curtains. She frowned as she searched the origin of the bright light. Seeing the glow through the woods, her frown deepened - and curiosity arose. That’s weird, she thought. Grabbing her cloak, she headed out of her room to find the glow.

The day started like any other ordinary day. The sun was shining and the wind picked up as she hurried to her work. Slamming into the office, she quickly sat down and began unwrapping her scarf. Her computer chimed to life. Knock, knock. She looked up and smiled. “So, how was it?” Her friend Elizabeth asked. “How was what?” Callie asked.

It was different, writing on a typewriter: the clatter and noise, the resistance of the old keys forcing her to really put some effort into each letter. She imagined she was writing by candlelight on a dark, stormy night. All the electronics - computer, mobile, lights - had powered off from the huge surge of lightening moments before. The storm intrigued her characters.
